Non Slip Bench Press Mat: What It Does and What to Look For

PR Grip4 min read

A non slip bench press mat is a thin, double-sided grip layer that you lay on the bench pad. One face holds the pad, the other holds your back, so your setup stays where you put it from the first rep to the last. The best ones grip on both sides, stay thin enough not to change your position, cover the full contact area of the pad, and wipe clean in seconds. A good one works on benches and on the pads of most machines too.

What does a non slip bench mat actually do?

It turns a smooth pad into a surface that holds. On a bare bench, your upper back rests on vinyl that was built to be easy to clean, not to grip. Under load, and with a bit of sweat, you creep toward the rack and lose your arch.

With a mat on the pad, both contact points hold at once: the mat on the bench and you on the mat. Your shoulder blades stay set, your leg drive turns into tightness instead of travel, and the bar is the only thing that moves.

“Both sides bite. The mat does not creep on the pad and I do not creep on the mat. Whole problem, solved in both directions.”

Why are gym bench pads so slippery?

Gym pads are made to be durable and easy to wipe down. Vinyl and leather are smooth by design. Add sweat, a smooth training shirt or compression gear, and the pad gets slicker as your session goes on. Commercial pads that have seen years of wipe-downs can be slicker still. Here is how to fix a slippery vinyl bench, at home or on the road.

What should you look for in a non slip bench mat?

Whether you call it a bench press mat, a weight bench mat or a lifting mat, the same six points decide whether it works.

  • Grip on both faces. A mat that only grips on one side still lets you slide, either against the pad or against the mat.
  • Thin and light. You want grip, not cushioning. A thick mat changes your position on the bench.
  • Enough coverage. It should cover the full contact area under your upper back on a standard bench.
  • No adhesive. A mat that grips through pressure leaves nothing behind on shared gym equipment.
  • Easy to clean. It will meet sweaty pads every session, so it needs to wipe down and survive the wash.
  • Portable. If it does not fit in your gym bag, it will not make it to the gym.

Mat, towel, chalk or grippy shirt: which one works?

Option What it does well Where it falls short
Towel Keeps sweat off the pad Bunches and slides once you are under load
Chalk Adds grip to your back Messy, and many gyms restrict it
Grippy shirt Adds grip when you wear it Only works on the days you have it on
Non slip mat Holds the pad and your back at the same time One more thing in your bag

If sliding is the problem, the mat is the only option that holds on both sides of the contact point. If you already train with a towel, here is how a towel and a grip mat work together.

Where can you use a non slip mat in the gym?

Anywhere your body meets the equipment:

“Chest press, row, leg press, seated calves in one session. Moved the mat with me. Four machines, zero slip.”

How does PR Grip compare on those six points?

Here is how PR Grip lines up against the checklist.

  • Both faces grip. HexaTrac, PR Grip's grip pattern, runs on both sides of the mat.
  • Thin and light. About 300 grams, so it adds grip without adding cushion.
  • Covers the pad. 16 x 26 inches (about 41 x 66 cm), sized for standard flat and adjustable benches.
  • No adhesive. It grips through pressure, so it leaves no residue on the bench or machine.
  • Easy to clean. Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap, or wash it cold and hang it to dry.
  • Portable. It rolls into a gym bag.

Frequently asked questions

What is a non slip bench press mat?

It is a thin, double-sided grip layer you lay on the bench pad. One side holds the pad and the other holds your back, so you stay in the position you set.

What size should a bench press mat be?

Big enough to cover the contact area under your upper back on a standard bench. PR Grip is 16 x 26 inches (about 41 x 66 cm), which covers a standard flat or adjustable bench, a leg press seat or a machine pad.

Will a non slip mat leave residue on the bench?

Not if it grips through pressure. PR Grip uses no adhesive, so it leaves nothing on the bench or the machine.

Does a non slip mat work on leather and vinyl?

Yes. PR Grip's double-sided HexaTrac grip holds on vinyl, leather and padded surfaces.

How do you clean a non slip bench mat?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap between sessions. When it needs more, wash it cold and hang it to dry.
